ANIMO LEADERSHIP CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL

Mark Friedman has been an educator and mentor to high school students for over a decade. His passion is marine biology and he has channeled that passion into getting his students on the water working to prevent ocean pollution. He has done this through the LA Maritime Institute, taking students out on boats to get their hands wet. He has also done it internationally, collaborating with other educators in Japan and Chile. Perhaps most significantly, he has mobilized his students at Animo High School in Lennox to take the message of micro plastics into the local community and raise awareness of this vital topic.Mark Friedman has been an educator and mentor to high school students for over a decade. Calling all high-school and college students to join us on the journey to finding new methods to eliminate plastic in our oceans.

Thank you to all of those who donated to our GoFundMe for our trips to Cuba and Japan from June to July of 2019!!!
We greatly appreciate your efforts as we continue to expand the collaboration between nations, and look forward to collaborating with our new contacts.

Who are we?

The Animo Leadership Marine Biology Club is composed of Animo Leadership Charter High School students in Lennox, California, however as our school is in a CDP (census-designated place) we are located in the city of Inglewood. Our goal, and challenge, is to inform the public about plastic pollution and cooperate with them to come up with solutions to reduce, recycle and prevent plastic environmental pollution. The club has had multiple teams, each with their own objective, tasks and goals but all involving microplastic data collection or education. Some teams conducted research while others focused on keeping our community updated on the activities and projects of the other teams.

As of now the Los Angeles team had been reduced to 4 students and we participate in community outreaches at Aquaria, Earth Day, science and health fairs, teachers' education, other schools’ activities, and educate on the effects and human impacts of plastic pollution and advocate solutions people can participate in to help reduce ocean plastic contamination. As high schoolers conducting research and advocacy, we collaborate with students in Japan, Taiwan, Chile, Thailand, Singapore, Norway, Honduras, and even Cuba, as well as several other U.S. states and Skype with collaborators and groups of new students who want to begin similar projects.

Collaborators

We are working in close collaboration with USC Sea Grant, Algalita, 5Gyres, Heal the Bay, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Reef Check, USC Wrigley Marine Science Center, LA Maritime Institute, Plastic Ocean, Last Plastic Straw, City2Sea, Wakasa High School and many others to obtain the most accurate data collection & analysis to be made public & integrate this into plastic collection studies taking place in Florida, Oregon, Alabama & internationally.

Our Mission

Our focus is the analysis of the quantity and type of the molecular composition of plastics obtained at local beaches, harbors, and oceans. Through the use of mass spectrometry, we hope to one day determine the possible origin of the plastics but certainly which polymers and what type of plastics mimic hormones (Estrogen and Testosterone) and are disruptors to our endocrine system.
